For Hispanics, the food and the ingredients used in traditional recipes are influenced by family and emotional values. We prefer fresh ingredients, locally grown for our dishes. However, the acculturation of the Hispanic community in the United States and poverty levels led us to a degradation of our diet and resulted in the high incidence of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
In this edition of Your Faith Al Día we talk about nutrition and the Hispanic community. Did you know that Hispanics are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic whites? That diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death among Hispanics and fourth among old people and women? That our diet is taking us to cardiovascular disease and rampant obesity?
