Thousands of Catholics Gather to Get Closer to God for “Ultreya De Campo”

Thousands of Catholics from the Diocese of Brooklyn headed out of the city to get closer to God over the weekend. 

The Mass, called the “Ultreya de Campo,” was held at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Pennsylvania. 

The annual event is a staple for the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Cursillo movement. 

The community focuses on laypeople becoming Church leaders and strengthening relationships with God. 

Bishop Robert Brennan celebrated the Ultreya de Campo with more than 2,000 faithful parishioners.

Parishioners in Gowanus Celebrate St. Anthony of Padua in Annual Festival

If you’re in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn then you probably know that Tuesday, June 13, marked the beginning of St. Anthony of Padua’s feast. It’s a century-old tradition for parishioners at Our Lady of Peace Church to renew their love for the saint.

St. Anthony is widely known to Catholics as the patron saint of lost items. He is called upon by individuals who have misplaced or lost something and seek his intercession to help them find it.

Jessica Easthope was at Our Lady Of Peace Church to speak with parishioners about how they have celebrated St. Anthony.

Sound of Freedom Actors Hope to Spread Awareness of the Issue of Child Sex Trafficking

There’s a new movie about to hit theaters that’s shining a spotlight on the worldwide issue of child sex trafficking. 

In the “Sound of Freedom,” a former government agent goes out on his own, embarking on a dangerous mission to rescue children from traffickers.

The movie stars actor Jim Caviezel from “The Passion of The Christ” and actor/producer Eduardo Verástegui, who was executive director of the pro-life movie “Unplanned.”

Both Caviezel and Verástegui sat down with Currents News to talk about the film and real world dilemma of child sex trafficking.

Bishop Brennan Reconsecrates St. Joseph Church After Desecration

Bishop Robert Brennan reconsecrated St. Joseph Church in Astoria June 9 after the church was desecrated June 5.

Bishop Brennan led the parish in prayers and blessed the altar, the prayer chapel, the walls, and the faithful with holy water.

A 21-year-old man who appeared to be emotionally disturbed entered St. Joseph Church in Astoria on June 5, broke open the tabernacle, removed the holy Eucharist stored inside it, and carelessly tossed it around, church officials said.

According to the Diocese of Brooklyn, police from the 114th Precinct responded to a 911 call that evening about a man who was breaking things inside the church at 28-47 43rd St. and trying to hurt himself.

Eucharistic Processions Launch Year of the Parish Revival In Diocese of Brooklyn

Several hundred people from eight parishes on the west side of Brooklyn poured onto Court Street June 11 to proclaim the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

The gathering, like many others throughout the diocese, was an observance of the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (formerly called Corpus Christi), when Catholics worldwide celebrate the gift of the Eucharist.

Sunday’s procession stepped off from Carroll Park on Court Street and terminated four blocks later at St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish.

Scholars Take On Collars For Catholic Schools Night

In the heart of Coney Island, at Maimonides Park, a unique showdown is set to take place. But it’s not the usual matchup between the Cyclones and the Blue Claws that has everyone talking. This time, it’s the Collars versus the Scholars.

This wouldn’t be the first time the two teams collided though. It’ll be the fourth annual softball game that takes place on Catholic Schools Night. The participants on each team? Principals from the Diocese of Brooklyn schools, who will go head-to-head with their adversaries — the priests they work closely with.

The anticipated softball game will kick off at Maimonides Park on June 28. The gates will open at 5:45 p.m.
