NYS Assembly Proposes $30M in Funding to Combat Heroin Epidemic

A proposal to set aside $30 million to fight the heroin epidemic in New York state has been announced by the state Assembly. The measure would expand prevention, treatment and recovery efforts around the state. Many of those addicted are right here in Brooklyn and Queens. One youth substance abuse counselor from Midwood compares overdose deaths to figures only seen during wartime. Michelle Powers reports.

Hope for Crisis Pregnancies in Jamaica

Offering free ultrasounds, prenatal care, counseling, parenting classes and referral services, New Beginnings Center of Hope just opened its doors in Jamaica, Queens – a neighborhood where more than half of pregnancies are aborted. The all-volunteer staff wants to reach out to women and help them to know their options. The center just installed an ultrasound machine, thanks to a grant from the Knights of Columbus.

NYC Commemorates “Comfort Women”

Despite last year’s landmark agreement between South Korea and Japan, independent actions continue to shine a light on the Imperial Japanese Army and its wartime sex slavery actions. On this International Women’s Day, New York City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo introduced a “Comfort Women Resolution.” Michelle Powers was at City Hall with the details.

Irish Pride in the Rockaways

Queens breaks out the bagpipes and shamrocks to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Held in the Rockaways, the 41st annual parade celebrates the saint who evangelized Ireland and is well-attended by community members and politicians alike. Among the honorees are Grand Marshall John J. Murphy of Plumbers Local Union No. 1, and Fr. Jim Cunningham who has ministered in many parishes including St. Mary Star of the Sea, Far Rockaway, and Good Shepherd, Marine Park.
