St. Mel’s Church Getting a Facelift
The interior of St. Mel Church has been largely untouched for 35 years, and according to parishioners, looks “tired.” They pledged $2.4 million dollars for renovations and other projects. Seniors Show Off Art in Williamsburg
Ahead of Father’s Day, when families shower their dads with gifts, Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach connects with seniors showing off their own gifts – for art. The Northside Senior Center, an outreach by Brooklyn’s Catholic Charities, offers painting classes for community members over sixty. Annually, the Center opens its doors to show off the works of art.
Cupcakes
Sal Lobuglio from the Little Cupcake Bakeshop joins Monsignor Jamie in the kitchen along with students from Saint Bernard’s Church to learn how to decorate a buttercream cupcake. Monsignor and Sal talk about the value of community charities and then Monsignor Jamie shows Sal how to make his mother’s chicken rollatini with asparagus and mushrooms.
Catholic Charities
Today, Joe Estevez visits Catholic Charities in East Los Angeles and talks to Roberto Ramirez and the director of the branch, Mary Romero, about the work that is done and how people can make a difference. Then Joe interviews John Vutech, who tells the story of how he rediscovered his faith after a long battle with alcoholism. Later, he visits Saint Isabel Church in Los Angeles and gives the background on the saint it was named after and the stalwarts in the Latin community that gather there.
NY Organization Declares “Blood Emergency”
The tragedy in Orlando serves as a critical reminder that blood supplies in the New York City area are dangerously low. The New York Blood Center has declared a blood emergency and warns that the city may not be prepared to adequately respond to incidents involving multiple injuries. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports from a mobile blood drive in Brooklyn.
47 Years of Service for Middle Village Teacher
Michael McHugh started teaching at Our Lady of Hope School in 1969, just six years after the school opened. Forty-seven years later, this well-known face is retiring. About 11% of the population of Middle Village has sat in his classroom, including parents and their children. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports from an assembly called to celebrate the beloved educator.

Students Hold Ceremony to Retire Old Glory
Canarsie’s Our Lady of Trust Catholic Academy celebrates Flag Day with a flag retirement ceremony. The FDNY helps the students to salute and burn Old Glory according to a code set forth by Congress. Flag Day is celebrated annually on June 14th — the day that the Stars and Stripes were adopted as the symbol of the nation. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports.
