“Equal Access is a Civil Right”
Small-business owners who operate individual taxi medallions rallied at City Hall as part of a campaign to win fairer treatment from City leaders for taxi medallion owners and New Yorkers who are disabled. The rally-goers called on the City Council to require all for-hire vehicle operators, including Uber and Lyft, to meet the same 50% wheel-chair accessible mandate yellow taxis must meet by 2020. Holding signs reading “UberUNFAIR” and “Equal Access is a Civil Right,” wheelchair users joined in the rally. Michelle Powers was there and filed this report.
“Best Birthday Party” For Kids in Brownsville Shelter
Brooklyn businesses provide a huge birthday extravaganza for kids staying in CAMBA Flagstone Family Center, a shelter for about 150 families with over 400 children. “Operation Birthday Party” was started by Dyker Heights cake maker Maria Nitti, who has held monthly birthday celebrations at the shelter for a full year. As Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports, the kids are having a blast.

On the one hour season finale of On The Block, the pastor of St. Sebastian’s parish, Father Kevin Abels, spoke with Ed on the steps of Saint Joseph’s Co-Cathedral. A former vocations director for the Diocese, Father Abels explains the difficulties of following a religious vocation in this day and age.They also talked about his decision to become a priest and how St. Sebastian’s caters to a multi-ethnic community, as one of the largest parishes in the diocese.
Celebrating Freedom with Oldest Independence Day Parade
The oldest Independence Day Parade in New York City marches down Court Street to honor those who served. During the 111th Annual Parade, the Knights of Columbus award U.S. Army Sergeant Bryan Dilberian, a wounded combat warrior who had been deployed to Afghanistan, and NYPD Deputy Chief Charles Scholl. Also honored is the Grand Marshal Robert Fox, vice chairman of the Long Island K. of C. Conference. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports from the parade route in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens.

Later on, Carlo Scissura, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, joins Monsignor Jamie in the kitchen to make sweet potato hash with lobster and roasted corn, while they talk about supporting the local community and it’s people.
Gender-Neutral Bathroom Bill Approved by City Council
All single-occupant bathrooms must be gender-neutral, removing all signs that dictate otherwise. That’s according to a new bill approved by the New York City Council, which is expected to be signed into law by Mayor Bill de Blasio. Brooklynites express mixed reactions – both for and against. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach reports from the city streets.

Today, we hear stories abut faith, love, and miracles. First, character actor Mark Proksch talks with Joe Estevez about his long career and meeting his wife on the set of The Office. Later, we meet the family of a baby who was born at 20 weeks and weighed only half a pound. They tell Alex’s story about how they never lost hope. Joe then gives the history of newly canonized Junipero Serra and his commentary on a recently passed law called the End of Life Option Act, allowing a terminal patient the option of physician-assistant suicide in California. Lastly, he visits Saint Agatha Church in South Central Los Angeles, telling the story of Saint Agatha.
