St Martin de Porres parish in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn is celebrating Black History Month with a mass that not only remembers important civil right events in African American history but also in the Brooklyn Diocese. Katie Engesser was there and filed this report.

After she died in 1857, the Brooklyn Star newspaper called Margaret Pine the last slave in New York. The article described her as “a sincere Christian” who was laid to rest in the borough’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Over time, though, signs of her gravesite vanished.
