The “Last Slave in New York”
After she died in 1857, the Brooklyn Star newspaper called Margaret Pine the last slave in New York. The article described her as “a sincere Christian” who was laid to rest in the borough’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Over time, though, signs of her gravesite vanished.
