Although he is now the pastor of St Francis of Assisi church in Queens, Monsignor Ralph Maresca once served under Bishop Thomas Daily as his secretary. As he mourns the loss of his friend and mentor, he talks with reporter Katie Engesser about the Bishop Daily he knew best.
Bishop Daily shepherded the Catholics of Brooklyn and Queens from 1990-2003. His fluency in Spanish served him well in the Diocese of Immigrants. Another hallmark of Bishop Daily’s tenure was a vibrant defense of the sanctity of life. He even clashed with then New York Governor Mario Cuomo over the politician’s pro-abortion position. Ten months after reaching the mandatory retirement age of seventy-five, the Vatican accepted Bishop Daily’s resignation. Then Pope Saint John Paul II appointed Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio as the seventh Bishop of Brooklyn. Today, he reflected on the passing of his predecessor.
