Catholics all over the world are celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary body and soul into heaven. The holy day of obligation, which is called the Dormition of the Theotokoes in Eastern Churches, became Catholic Church dogma in 1950. However, the belief is traced back to the Apostle Thomas who opened Mary’s tomb and found it empty. Tim Harfmann reports from the Cathedral Basilica of St. James in downtown Brooklyn, where the Assumption Mass is offered.

Remembering Blessed Oscar Romero on 100th Birthday
Today is the 100th anniversary of Blessed Oscar Romero’s birth. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia is hoping the martyr will become a Saint within a year. The Archbishop is officially responsible to shepherding the canonization case and says the biggest hurdle was recognizing that the Salvadoran Church leader was murdered over his faith and not his political position. The postulator says the essence of Blessed Romero’s holiness is that “he loved Jesus and his flock more than he loved life… This is the meaning of martyrdom.” For more on Oscar Romero’s life, our Michelle Powers meets with a refugee from El Salvador – a Catholic priest who holds the would-be Saint in high esteem.
