This year, though, controversy swirls on the sidelines as marchers parade past St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the rain. The clamor is over the future of Columbus statues in New York, particularly the 125-year-old monument at the southwest corner of Central Park. Some want it removed, while others fiercely defined it. At Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio’s urging, Catholic Churches throughout Brooklyn and Queens are taking action to help the people of Puerto Rico. The parishes are conducting emergency collections of ‘material goods.’ Essential items include nonperishable food, baby formula, flashlights and batteries.
