Rockaway Academy Receives Papal Goodies

The Catholic academies and elementary schools of Brooklyn and Queens took part in a raffle being run by Catholic Telemedia Network, which is part of NET’s parent company, the DeSales Media Group.  The prize was a box of papal goodies and the contest coincided with Pope Francis’s visit to New York City.  Currents education correspondent Marie Elena Giossi reports from the school that won, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy in Rockaway, Queens.

Franciscan Marathon Vet Offers Tips

Stanley Richards & Casimiro “Cas” Torres – Fortune Society

Stanley is Senior Vice President of Fortune Society. He has worked in the Criminal Justice field for over 23 years. His work with incarcerated persons started while he was himself incarcerated in a NY State prison, where he worked as the Inmate Director of
Pre-Release. He is a graduate of Medaille College, and also a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow.

Caimiro “Cas” Torres spent 16 years in various juvenile and adult detention facilities for a variety of crimes fueled by a desperate need to escape the pain of his childhood on the streets of NYC. Cas arrived at the Fortune Society in 2005 determined to change his life. Since then, he has served on its board of directors, appeared on CNN, NBC, NY1 and has written articles for the New York Times and El Diario. He also co-wrote the play “The Castle,” which was eventually produced as the movie “Released.”

Currently, Cas is on hiatus from clinical work and is working as Superintendent at the Fortune Society’s supportive housing “Castle Gardens.” He is married with a son and a daughter who are attending University of Bridgeport and Syracuse University.

Jonathan is a resident at Covenant House.
After barely surviving four foster homes, child abuse, neglect, and living on the streets, Jonathan came to Covenant House. He is now doing extremely well, pursuing an acting career and working with the famed Stella Adler Acting Studio.

Bobby Watts is the Executive Director of Care for the Homeless.

Mr. Watts has more than 25 years of experience working with and for homeless, mentally ill, HIV-positive, and substance-abusing populations. He is currently the President of the Board of Directors of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, which strengthens and represents homeless health care providers across the country.
