“Called to Serve” After Living in the World
Two of the men who will be ordained priests first pursued other occupations. Deacon Victor Manuel Bolaños was a successful engineer, and Deacon Mark Bristol served in the US Navy before they received their calling to the priesthood. Forming Priests in Mercy
About 180 priests of Brooklyn and Queens join Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio for renewal and ongoing formation at Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. The clergy convocation is focused on mercy, with the keynote address given by New Hampshire priest Msgr. Anthony R. Frontiero, a “missionary of mercy” commissioned by Pope Francis. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach speaks with Msgr. Frontiero and the Brooklyn priest who organized the event, Fr. Joseph Fonti, about the importance of mercy in the life of a priest.
Father Michael Gelfant
We spoke with Father Gelfant on the steps of St. Finbar’s Church, Bath Beach, where he is pastor. Father Gelfant is one of the youngest pastors in the Diocese and recently completed a complete renovation of the parish church, with all work dome by the parishioner themselves. Father Gelfant told us about his conversion to Catholicism and how he came to think about becoming a priest. He also spoke about the struggles of seminary life as well as the joys of being a priest.
Moms Demand Gun Sense with BK Bridge March
On the eve of Mother’s Day, thousands joined in marching across New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge to demand an end to gun violence. The New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which advocates for reforms to reduce gun violence, organized the annual event to spread the organization’s message that the country needs stronger gun laws. Michelle Powers was there and filed this report.
