D-Day Medic Remembers Omaha Beach
A medic on Omaha Beach, Joseph Chiofalo’s mission was to save lives. This veteran received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his actions during World War II. Ahead of the 72nd anniversary of D-Day, he shares his story. A lifelong Catholic, Mr. Chiofalo is currently a parishioner of Our Lady of Hope Church in Queens. Owner Lou DiPalo shows Monsignor what makes a great cheese while discussing the importance of hard work and family. Back in the kitchen, Michael Russo from the famous Gargiulo’s in Coney Island joins Monsignor Jamie to make a simple and delicious breakfast casserole. They speak about how Gargiulo’s became a staple in Brooklyn due to the hard work of Mr. Russo’s family.

Priest Candidates “Called to Serve” from Other Nations
The diverse people of the Diocese of Brooklyn are receiving new ministers for their spiritual needs. Of the ten men who will be ordained priests, seven were born outside of the United States. Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach completes the “Called to Serve” series by introducing the last two candidates to the priesthood. Deacon Uririoghene “Melchizedek” Okrokoto is from Nigeria, while Deacon Lukasz Kubiak comes from Poland. Both believe God is calling them to minister in the Diocese of Immigrants.
The ten candidates will be ordained on Saturday, June 4th, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Brooklyn. Watch the ceremony live on NET-TV starting at 11am.

“Called to Serve” in the Diocese of Immigrants
Many of the men who will be ordained priests for the Brooklyn Diocese – also known as the Diocese of Immigrants – are immigrants themselves. Deacon Ambiorix Osorio was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to East New York as a teenager. Deacon Yvon Hector Aurelien began his priestly studies in Haiti before moving to New York about five years ago. Both share their vocation stories in the fourth segment of the “Called to Serve” series, where Currents Correspondent Katie Breidenbach introduces the men who will be ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn on June 4th.

We met Msgr. Steven Aguggia on the street of the original St. Margaret’s Church in Middle Village, where he is the pastor. Along with being the pastor of the vibrant Queens parish, he is also the head of the Diocese’s Marriage Tribunal. He spoke with us about his journey to the priesthood and his life as a pastor, while also highlighting his many insights about the annulment process and the value of protecting marriage in today’s Church.
