A Vatican council has confirmed the martyrdom of Father Stanley Rother, paving the way for a possible beatification by Pope Francis. Father Rother served in Guatemala during the brutal civil war and refused to abandon his flock even when his life was in danger. Father John Vesey, who succeeded Father Rother in Guatemala, says his predecessor’s actions were something the locals publicly commemorated from the very beginning.
