Tuesday marked the 80th anniversary of the election of Pope Pius. He headed the Catholic Church until his death in October 1958.

Pope Francis has told the world that in less than one year, the secret Vatican archives concerning Pius, the holocaust and World War Two will be opened.

The decision comes after three decades of pressure from historians and Jewish organizations who want to learn the truth of how the Vatican responded to Nazism.
