The war in Asia’s largest Catholic country of the Philippines is feared to be the opening phase of a concerted Islamic attempt to create a caliphate in the region. America’s top military commander in the Pacific is calling it a “wake-up call” for every nation in the area. Catholics living in nearby northern Indonesia are worried. The communications director for the Manado Diocese says anxiety is soaring and people are on the lookout for any invaders. This weekend, Indonesian Catholics from across America are traveling to New York to attend a special gathering amid the troublesome news from their homeland. Tim Harfmann learns more about the concerns from the priest who heads up Indonesian affairs for the Brooklyn diocese.
