It was an iconic moment for the country: on February 23, 1945, five U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman raised the American flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima.
And a Queens resident was there to witness it. Ninety year old Michael Severino lives at the Little Sisters of the Poor Queen of Peace Residence in Middle Village. We previously caught up with him as part of a story on residents who help create Christmas crafts that the Little Sisters then sell.
During World War II, Mr. Severino served in the Air Force and he spoke with Currents, recounting that service as well as the flag raising on Iwo Jima.
