Martin Luther King Day is celebrated on Monday, Jan. 20, but Jan. 15 would have been the civil rights leader’s actual ninetieth birthday.
Joining Currents News to reflect on that milestone — and why Dr. King’s message is so important to the values of all Catholics — is Father Alonzo Cox, pastor of Saint Martin de Porres parish and coordinator of the Brooklyn Vicariate for Black Catholic Concerns.
Dr. King said that he had “seen the promised land.” Fr. Cox shares his views on how much progress we as a society have made in getting there since.
Martin Luther King Day is also seen as an unofficial start to Black History Month. Fr. Cox highlights events that are being planned around the Brooklyn Diocese.
